Connecting street and park
This project resulted from a limited competition (a collaboration between TERROIR and AJ+C) for a new mixed-use development at the edge of Belmore Park in Sydney. The design was subject to a series of constraints – solar access to the park and SEPP65 requirements for sunlight to apartments, and urban design questions such as the relationship between the development and adjacent laneway, park and Pitt Street.
The project has a three part diagram that mediates these issues: a transparent retail base with a subterranean level lit from above, an urban block consisting of a potential mix of commercial or serviced apartments, and a living wedge at the top with premium apartments. This collection of elements addressed each of the key issues while forming an intriguing whole that brings all three together.
