Forecourt at Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery

This structure was delivered as part of an exhibition to display the new masterplan for the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) developed by TERROIR and Johnson Pilton Walker (JPW). One of the drivers of the masterplan was the opportunity reveal a far greater number of items from the museum’s collection and archaeology from the site to the general public. The purpose of this small building was to explain a second driver – the potential top reveal and interpret the significant archaeology on the site.

The structure was sited on an investigative archaeological dig undertaken as part of the masterplan process but had not been opened to the public. This structure – one of a series of related elements – both alerted visitors to the dig while also protecting it.  This pavilion is the most potent – providing weather protection to a dig while having a dramatic role in alerting visitors to the presence of this work.
