Third Spaces

Third space is the creation of a space, which, while internal to other spaces with already determined logics of creation, is afforded by those logics but neither formed nor organized by them.

Thirdspaces then provide a mode for describing, spatially, the potential that still exists for a political community as understood by Ranciere (Disagreement: Politics and. Philosophy), as “community of interruptions, fractures, irregular and local, through which egalitarian logic comes and divides the police community from itself.

Arendt suggests that the spaces of politics might be spaces of worldly and contingent resistance to systematization, while Cunningham has described them as “in-between spaces,” “fissures, cracks, and ‘free’ spaces … fragments left unoccupied by the ‘glocal’ urban police order that regulates, assigns, and distributes . . ”
